Membership applications are welcomed from people aged 16 or over who are based in the UK and have an interest in engineering, science, or technology.

Membership Categories and Annual Fees

Student Membership — £20 per year

For undergraduate students, apprentices, and others working towards a career in engineering, science, or technology.

Postgraduate applicants who meet the academic requirements for Professional Membership may be admitted as Professional Members instead.

Retired Membership — £20 per year

A reduced annual rate for eligible retired members who wish to remain involved in the Society and its activities.

Associate Membership — £20 per year

For individuals who support the aims of Al-Kindi Society and wish to participate in its activities but do not meet the academic or professional requirements for admission as a Professional Member.

Associate Members do not have voting rights and cannot stand for election to Board or management positions.

Professional Membership — £30 per year

For engineers, technologists, scientists, and other professionals who meet the academic and professional standards established by the Board.

Professional Members are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a recognised allied science, such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, information technology, computer science, or environmental science.

Professional Members may use the designatory letters MKSoE, provided that their membership remains active and their annual subscription has been paid.

Fellow Membership — £50 per year

For experienced professionals who have demonstrated significant responsibility, sustained achievement, and a high standard of professionalism in an area relevant to the Society’s work.

Applications are assessed against the criteria established by the Board.

Fellows may use the designatory letters FKSoE, provided that their membership remains active and their annual subscription has been paid.

Honorary Fellowship

Honorary Fellows are elected by the Board of Directors.

Honorary Fellowship may be awarded to:

• Individuals distinguished by their work in an engineering or related discipline relevant to the Society’s objectives.

• Individuals whom the Society wishes to recognise for exceptional service.

• Distinguished individuals whose association would benefit the Society.

Honorary Fellows may use the designatory letters HonFKSoE.

Voting and Governance

Eligible Student Members, Professional Members, and Fellows whose membership subscriptions are fully paid may attend the Annual General Meeting and other General Meetings.

Each eligible member is entitled to one vote.

Associate Members do not have voting rights and cannot stand for election to Board or management positions.

Through participation in meetings and elections, eligible members can contribute to the governance, priorities, and public-benefit activities of the Society.

Once your registration is complete, you will be able to select the membership category that best reflects your qualifications, professional experience, and circumstances.

Submitting an application for a particular category does not guarantee admission to that category. The Board may request supporting evidence, recommend a different category, or refuse an application where the relevant membership requirements have not been met.

Membership Declaration

By submitting a membership application, you confirm that the information provided is complete and accurate.

If your application is accepted, you agree to:

• Be admitted to the Register of the Society.

• Comply with the Society’s Memorandum and Articles of Association.

• Comply with the Society’s By-laws, Code of Conduct, and Code of Ethics.

• Observe any amendments made to these documents during your membership.

• Pay the applicable annual membership subscription.

• Adhere to the terms and conditions of membership until your membership has formally ended.

Membership Terms and Conditions

Applications and Admission

Al-Kindi Society welcomes applications from UK-based individuals aged 16 or over who have an interest in engineering, science, or technology.

The Society has five principal membership categories:

• Honorary Fellow

• Fellow

• Professional Member

• Associate Member

• Student Member

Admission to membership is subject to approval. Applying under a particular category does not guarantee admission to that category.

The Society reserves the right to request evidence of eligibility, offer an alternative membership category, or refuse an application.

Standards of Conduct

All members must comply with the Society’s Code of Conduct, Code of Ethics, By-laws, and governing documents.

Members are expected to conduct themselves professionally and avoid behaviour that may damage the interests or reputation of the Society.

Honorary Fellows

Honorary Fellows are elected by the Board of Directors.

They are individuals distinguished by their work in an engineering discipline relevant to the Society’s objectives, or distinguished individuals whom the Society wishes to honour for services rendered or whose association would benefit the Society.

Honorary Fellows may use the designatory letters HonFKSE while they remain members.

Fellows

Fellows must have demonstrated significant individual responsibility, sustained achievement, and professionalism in an area relevant to the Society’s work, to the standard required by the Board.

Fellows may use the designatory letters FKSE while their membership remains active.

Professional Members

Professional Members must have achieved the standard of knowledge, understanding, and experience required by the Board.

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering or an allied science, including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, information technology, computer science, or environmental science.

Professional Members may use the designatory letters MKSE while their membership remains active.

Associate Members

Associate Membership is available to individuals who value involvement with Al-Kindi Society but do not meet the requirements for admission as Professional Members.

Associate Members may participate in Society activities but do not have voting rights and cannot stand for election to Board or management positions.

Student Members

Student Membership is intended for individuals working towards a career in science, engineering, or technology through university study, an apprenticeship, or another recognised route.

Postgraduate applicants who meet the academic requirements for Professional Membership may be admitted as Professional Members instead.

Use of Designatory Letters

Professional Members, Fellows, and Honorary Fellows may use the relevant designatory letters for as long as they remain active members and, where applicable, have paid their annual membership subscriptions.

Designatory letters must no longer be used if membership expires, lapses, is suspended, or is terminated.

Transferring Membership Category

Members may apply to transfer to another membership category at any time, provided that they meet the relevant eligibility criteria.

The Society may request evidence of qualifications, professional experience, student status, retirement, or other relevant circumstances.

Membership Subscriptions

Membership subscriptions cover a period of one year and are payable annually in advance.

The Society operates anniversary billing. A member’s renewal date is normally based on the month in which they joined.

Membership subscriptions cannot normally be paid by instalments.

Fees are reviewed periodically. Members will be notified of changes through their renewal notices, and current fees will be published on the Society’s website.

If a subscription remains unpaid for more than three months after its due date, the membership may be treated as lapsed. Membership services, voting rights, use of designatory letters, and inclusion in the professional register may then be suspended.

Reduced Fees

Reduced rates or subscription discounts may be available in exceptional or special circumstances.

The Society may request evidence to confirm eligibility for a reduced rate.

Resignation

A member may resign by submitting written notice to the Board.

Where notice of resignation is received within 90 days of the membership subscription start date, the member may be eligible for a refund, subject to the refund conditions below.

Refunds Following Resignation

Eligible refunds will normally be returned through the original payment method within 30 days of receiving the resignation notice.

• Payments made by credit or debit card will normally be returned to the original card.

• Payments made by Direct Debit or BACS will normally be returned to the originating bank account.

• Payments made through PayPal will normally be returned to the originating PayPal account.

• Payments made by another method may be refunded by bank transfer or PayPal.

Cash refunds are not available.

Rejoining the Society

A former member who resigned or allowed their membership to lapse may apply to rejoin.

Where the rejoining date is within three months of the previous renewal date, the original renewal date may remain unchanged and any outstanding renewal fee may be payable.

Where the rejoining date is more than three months after the previous renewal date, a new renewal date may be established. The next annual subscription will normally become due one year after the rejoining payment is processed.

A former member should rejoin within three years to retain their previous membership status. After more than three years, a new application may be required, and the applicant may be asked to provide updated evidence of eligibility.

Overpayments

Overpayments exceeding £5 will normally be refunded automatically within 28 days of the payment being processed.

Overpayments of £5 or less will be refunded when requested within 90 days. Where no refund is requested, the amount may be treated as a donation to the Society because of the disproportionate administrative cost of processing a small refund.

Refunds Following the Death of a Member

A refund may be available where a member dies within three calendar months of their subscription renewal date.

A claim should normally be made within one year of the original renewal payment date.

Where the original payment was made by Direct Debit or credit or debit card, the refund will normally be returned to the relevant account or card. Where this is not possible, payment may be made to the member’s estate.

The Society may request evidence of the authority of the executor or administrator, together with the relevant payment details.

Refund Exclusions

A refund may not be provided where the member has already received a financial benefit through their membership, such as a discounted event fee, conference registration, publication, or another paid benefit.

Complaints

Al-Kindi Society aims to serve its members effectively, professionally, and fairly.

Complaints and grievances will be reviewed as promptly as possible. Where an issue cannot be resolved immediately, the Society will normally provide an initial response within five working days.

Where further investigation is required, the member will be advised of the expected next steps and likely timescale.

Changes to the Terms

Al-Kindi Society reserves the right to amend its membership terms and conditions.

Material changes will be communicated to members and published through the Society’s appropriate communication channels.

The Society may refer to disciplines recognised within the UK engineering profession when assessing eligibility. Relevant areas include, but are not limited to:

Including aerodynamics, aircraft design, avionics, flight-control systems, aerospace systems, and satellite technology.

Agricultural Engineering

Including agricultural equipment, precision agriculture, irrigation, drainage, environmental systems, and sustainable agricultural technology.

Chemical Engineering

Including process engineering, biochemical engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, petrochemical engineering, and environmental chemical processes.

Civil Engineering

Including structural, geotechnical, transport, water-resources, infrastructure, and environmental engineering.

Electrical Engineering

Including power generation, transmission and distribution, electrical machines, control systems, power electronics, and energy systems.

Electronics Engineering

Including electronic circuit design, analogue and digital electronics, communications, radio-frequency engineering, microwave engineering, semiconductors, and microelectronics.

Environmental Engineering

Including pollution control, waste management, water treatment, sustainability, environmental impact, and renewable-energy systems.

Geotechnical Engineering

Including soil mechanics, foundation engineering, rock mechanics, tunnelling, groundwater engineering, and site investigation.

Marine and Offshore Engineering
